How to get from Southbank to the city’s most famous attractions

St Paul’s Cathedral

Visible across the river from Southbank, St Paul’s Cathedral remains one of London’s most famous architectural landmarks.

How to get there: You can reach the cathedral by crossing Millennium Bridge. Make sure to take in the panoramic views along the Thames as you do.

Somerset House

Located along the Strand, Somerset House is a cultural destination known for its exhibitions and courtyard events.

How to get there: Walking west from Bankside Yards along the Thames Path provides one of the most scenic routes to the landmark, passing the Southbank Centre and Waterloo Bridge along the way.

Covent Garden

Covent Garden combines historic market buildings with boutique shopping, theatres, restaurants, and street performances.

How to get there: Its central location makes it an easy extension of a Southbank walk – from Bankside Yards, just head across Waterloo Bridge or Blackfriars Bridge.

London Eye

The London Eye has become one of the capital’s defining landmarks since it opened on New Year’s Eve in 1999.

How to get there: This Southbank attraction is accessible on foot from Bankside Yards and is easily spotted as you head towards Westminster.

The Shard

Rising above the London skyline, The Shard is one of the capital’s most recognisable buildings. Alongside offices and restaurants, it’s home to viewing spaces overlooking the city and some of the most popular bars near Southbank.

How to get there: It’s 20 minutes’ walk from Bankside Yards, or you can catch the Thameslink from Blackfriars station to London Bridge.

One of Southbank’s most distinctive cultural landmarks, Shakespeare’s Globe celebrates London’s theatrical history through performances and exhibitions inspired by the original Elizabethan playhouse.

How to get there: Follow the Thames path to find this theatre, which is just 10 minutes’ walk from Bankside Yards.

Tate Modern

Tate Modern is one of the world’s leading modern art galleries and a defining cultural landmark of the city.  Hosting several exhibitions throughout the year and boasting beautiful riverside terraces, the Tate Modern is definitely worth a visit.

How to get there: A few minutes is all you need to reach the Tate Modern on foot from Bankside Yards, walking across the Thames Path or along Southwark Street.

Tower Bridge

One of neighbouring Southwark’s most famous and historical landmarks, Tower Bridge provides panoramic views across the city and towards Tower of London from its high-level walkways proving.

How to get there: Head east along the Thames path, stopping off at the iconic Borough Market or Hay’s Galleria on the way. You can also catch the Jubilee Line from Southwark to London Bridge.

Kensington Palace

Kensington Palace combines royal history with access to some of west London’s most famous museums and parks.

How to get there: From Southbank, catch either the Circle or District line from Blackfriars to Bayswater.

For those looking to escape the pace of central London, Hampstead Heath offers green spaces, woodland walks and panoramic skyline views from Parliament Hill.

How to get there: This North London spot is easily accessible from Southbank via the Northern Line. Take the Northern Line from Waterloo Station to Belsize Park.

One of Britain’s most famous royal landmarks, Buckingham Palace sits alongside the surrounding Green Park and St James’ Park.
